Automation/MES Engineer

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

We are seeking an Automation/MES Engineer, based in Malvern Pennsylvania in a hybrid work environment. This exciting position will be supporting the digital transformation and sustainability in manufactory for CertainTeed Roofing products in North America. This requires strong technical and communication skills to manage CertainTeed local factory operational technology (OT) and SCADA/MES and automation manufacturing infrastructure. This position will work closely with the IT Digital in Manufacturing teams and the factories to develop standards, develop and support projects, maintain local systems and provide level 1-2 support, ensuring quality of the delivery, availability and performance of OT, SCADA/MES and automation systems.

PAC/PLC Control Systems

• Develop/adopt future thinking automation and controls standards

• Utilize the control standards for development and implementation of the automation and controls obsolesce program roadmap.

• Development and implementation of a systematic back up/recovery and change control program for PAC/PLC, HMI and associated peripheral equipment programs.

• Support the factory Automation and Controls Engineers (s) in the below areas:

• Troubleshooting production PAC/PLC’s, their control systems and associated hardware

• Troubleshooting production VFD and servo drive systems, HMI systems and code

• PAC/PLC, HMI and drive system programming

• Ability to Interpret electrical schematics, industrial network schematics and complex safety circuit networks.

System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)/Manufacturing Execution System (MES)

• Advanced knowledge of one or more of the following; Wonderware System Platform, Rockwell SE, Inductive Automation Ignition and associated Historians

• OPC Servers, MS SQL Server to support guided configuration and enhancements

• Advanced troubleshooting of messaging from production floor equipment to-and-from the SCADA/MES systems.

• Work with factories to perform security updates and maintain backup and recovery plans for SCADA/MES.

Operational Technology [OT]

• Intermediate troubleshooting of Microsoft Server platforms using remote desktop protocol

• Intermediate troubleshooting of network switches, Internet Protocal routing and machine messaging protocols. TCP/IP, Modbus, DH+, RSControlNet etc.

• Working knowledge of the DMZ Firewall architecture

• Development and implementation of standards to maintain Factory Systems access control with Active Directory Groups and accounts used to interface with the SCADA/MES systems

Industrial Performance Improvement

• Ensure accurate documentation of all local MES&A platforms. Technical Architecture Manuals and Technical Operations Manuals.

• Support the analyses of performance data to improve electrical and automation equipment unplanned downtime.

• Analyze performance data to implement automation improvements which provides positive contribution to all key plant indicators (safety, quality, cost, and service).

• Participate in capital and process improvement teams budgeting

Competency Building

• Work closely with factory Automation, Engineering and Operations teams to coach and assess competencies in regards to area of focus.

• Act as positive change agent and Liaison between market and factory teams to ensure effective and clear communication in regards to area of responsibility.

• Assist in tracking and improving competency-building plans for key MES and Automation roles.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

• 5-7 Years’ industrial MES and automation experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering Technology

• Wonderware System Platform, Rockwell SE, Ignition or similar MES applications.

• PAC/PLC platforms, with specific, advanced capabilities with Rockwell product suites.

• SAP data flows for Manufacturing and Warehouse systems and their integration to MES.

• Industrial Networks

• Database, specifically SQL.

• Must be proficient in the use of common software packages including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Visio, Project, PowerPoint) and AutoCAD

• Teamwork, mentoring, and coaching skills

• Communication skills

• Change management skills

Certain states require pay information be provided in job postings. The national pay range for this position is $89,500 to $138,500 per year, however, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 12% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The total target cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position, is $100,200 to $155,100.

Responsible for preventative maintenance tasks on industrial machinery, maintain industrial equipment as necessary and support production as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect equipment and components for damage and wear utilizing gauges, measuring devices and experience to determine any necessary actions
  • Repair, adjust and modify power transmission equipment
  • Repair, adjust or replace pumps and supporting equipment
  • Fabricate and repair industrial equipment including welding framework for repairs
  • Use general shop and hand tools as necessary
  • Assist line mechanics and electricians as necessary when needed to support production including all of the above listed tasks and other means of support as needed
  • Respond to unexpected after hour call outs for repair and support
  • Must be forklift and golf cart certified
  • Maintain quality service by following organization standards

Automation Controls Engineer

The Role

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Manager, the Automation Controls Engineer - Maintenance will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, production, processing methods and controls in a manner consistent with CertainTeed Insulation’s Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives.

Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advances process control tools, this position will ensure that processes are centered, capable and in control; reduce process variations; and resolve special causes variation. This position will also provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical and database systems.

The Automation Controls Engineer - Maintenance may at times be scheduled to work off-hours as requirements dictate and occasionally be required to travel for training and visiting with vendors.

Requirements

  • Designing or developing new process control systems and revising / maintaining of existing processes; developing and implementing WCM projects; managing and guiding contractors, consultants, and suppliers; identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
  • Provide input into planning and scheduling of projects and preparing capital expenditures.
  • Interact with managers and supervisors at plant to secure appropriate resources to plan and implement controls projects.
  • Interact with consultants and suppliers to determine the compatibility of other systems and products as they may apply to WCM and Controls. Participates in Focus Improvement teams to resolve critical process and production problems with customers and vendors.
  • Develop and maintains PLC/HMI systems from the plant floor to management and financial levels.
  • Provide technical support and enhancement of automation related systems (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Data and Voice Networks / plant electrical distribution systems) and implement required updates to avoid technical obsolescence.
  • Ensure CertainTeed Insulation’s standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into power distribution and control systems.

 

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or similar discipline) from an accredited university or institution.
  • Minimum of 1-5 years applied professional experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) PLC in a manufacturing facility.
  • Solid understanding of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to plan, evaluate, organizing, and implement automation related projects and initiatives.
  • Ability to work off-hours as requirements dictate and occasionally be required to travel for training and visiting with vendors (Travel is estimated at less than 10%).

Under the direction of the Regional Quality Manager (West), this position is responsible for the leadership and direction of quality initiatives along with performance of products manufactured in the Roofing plant of Wilmington, CA. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of Quality Management Systems, ISO certification, as well as maintaining quality certifications to ensure quality in all products which results in a strong product reputation, reliable performance and thus, leading and/or growing market-share.

  • Manages quality management system and analytical services programs and functions.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to continually improve quality.
  • Creates and enforces quality management policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Manages and directs programs to ensure quality production from raw material sourcing through in-process and final inspection.
  • Selects, trains, directs, evaluates, and supports department personnel.
  • Manages departmental activities and capabilities to meet objectives within guidelines.
  • Project Management with emphasis on Quality related projects having direct/indirect impact on customer
  • Manage and maintain the organization’s quality inspection and product release programs for incoming and in-process materials and finished goods.
  • Facilitate activities and strategies related to change management to deliver necessary business results.
  • Partner with leadership team members in executing initiatives and projects to achieve strategic business plan and meet all objectives of the pillars.
  • Coordinates projects with other departments.
  • Primary customer contact for resolving quality related issues.
  • Recommends and implements methods to improve the quality of products and/or services.
  • Leads the hourly/salaried Quality Management team
  • Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, quality control, engineering or a related technical field
  • Experience in quality control &/or engineering, production management or project management or related environment
  • Prior supervisory experience desired.
  • Member of/Certified in: ASQ disciplines, knowledge in ISO 9001 methodology, familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, TPM, 5S & Six Sigma a plus
  • Analytical skills – including Excel, Access, Mini-tab and Data Management software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good leader – able to bring out the best in others by utilizing professional interactions with internal groups and customers.
  • Very good conflict resolution skills, ability to diffuse volatile situations
  • Ability to recognize quality expected and be able to reproduce it.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of changing situations.
  • Must be able to effectively use Microsoft Office including Excel/Word/PowerPoint

Certain states require pay information be provided in job postings. The national pay range for this position is $87,500 to $135,500 per year, however, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 12% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The total target cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position, is $98,000 to $151,760.

Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

The E&I Engineer will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, production, processing methods, instrumentation and controls, and distributed control system (DCS) management in a manner consistent with CertainTeed Gypsum Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives (VMVO).

Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advanced process control tools, this position will ensure that processes are centered, capable and in control; reduce process variations; and resolve special causes variation.

This position will also provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical and database systems and carry-out capital projects as needed.

  • Reports to the Engineering Manager and/or the Electrical/Instrumentation Manager.
  • Responsible for planning, evaluating, organizing and implementing automation related projects and initiatives.
  • Will oversee the Valmet DCS and QCS (Quality Control System)/scanner.
  • Responsibilities include designing or developing new process control systems and revising / maintaining of existing processes; developing and implementing WCM projects; managing and guiding contractors, consultants and suppliers; identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
  • Interacts with managers and supervisors at plant and corporate personnel to secure appropriate resources to plan and implement controls projects.
  • Interacts with consultants and suppliers to determine the compatibility of other systems and products as they may apply to WCM and Controls.
  • Works closely with the Production and Engineering Managers to coordinate changes in the production process and resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Manages automation related projects and provides weekly status report to plant management.
  • Develops and maintains PLC/HMI systems from the plant floor to management.
  • Provides technical support and enhancement of automation related systems (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Data and Voice Networks / plant electrical distribution systems) and implements required updates to avoid technical obsolescence.
  • Ensures CertainTeed Gypsum’s standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into power distribution and control systems.
  • Assists maintenance team with any difficult troubleshooting issues.
  • Uses advanced tools / techniques to reduce process variations and downtime.
  • Identifies and resolves special cause variation in the process.
  • Analyzes operating problems, develops solutions and leads the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Collects, interprets and extrapolates data from the production process to monitor current equipment performance against established baselines and applies appropriate correction actions.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.
  • Maintains records of plant and individual equipment performance.
  • Ensures full documentation of all projects and systems to WCM / Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.
  • Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring and Process &Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and flow charts required for the proper and efficient operation of plant equipment.
  • Provides training for operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforces plant rules and safety regulations, and supports VMVO and WCM initiatives.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of applied professional experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) PLC.
  • Programming of Allen Bradley PLCs is required.
  • Experience working within a paper mill environment.
  • Significant experience working with Valmet’s distributed control systems (DCS) and quality control systems (QCS).
  • Experience with OSIsoft/Aveva Pi and Aveva Wonderware
  • Experience with motor control equipment (VFD, DOL, soft start, and electronic overload)
  • Previous experience in electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial protocols / networking (switching & routing) and databases.
  • Prior experience working with DCS ideally in a paper mill setting.
  • Understanding of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Understanding of National Electrical Code (NEC) and Arc-Flash (NFPA-70E) code requirements.
  • Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving capabilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
